Plant protection that opens doors

More nurseries are moving from reactive pest control to proactive plant protection – and gaining a competitive edge in the process.

Structured systems like BioSecure HACCP support cleaner production, stronger surveillance and faster market access.

At Cameron’s Nursery in NSW, it’s already delivering results – fewer sprays, less rework, and smoother interstate trade.

GIA Board nominations

GIA’s constitution requires us to appoint a Nominations Committee each year to receive nominations for the Board of Directors and to put forward suitable candidates for election by the membership.

The Committee must comprise one serving GIA Director and two appropriately qualified individuals independent of  GIA. We are delighted to announce the appointment of this year’s Board Nominations Committee:

  • Carole Fudge (Benara Nurseries)
  • Neil Rechlin (NextGen Group)
  • Nick Hutchinson (GIA Board Director)

This year, two vacancies arise on the board as Ben Grange and Davina Boyd complete their maximum permitted terms as Directors. GIA will be opening the nominations for these vacancies on 27 August 2025, with the deadline for nominations to be submitted on 14 October 2025.

Successfully elected nominees will be announced at Annual General Meeting which will be held online on Thursday, 27 November 2025.

New campaign makes plants the hero of home wellbeing

A national PR push is putting indoor plants back in the spotlight – helping more Australians see them as essential, not optional.

The campaign encourages people to ‘Air Curate’ their homes, tapping into the science-backed benefits of indoor greenery, including improved air quality and mental wellbeing (RMIT Healthy Homes Study).

With TV personalities Mitch and Mark leading the charge, the message is simple: plants aren’t just pretty – they’re purposeful.

What’s in it for you?

  • More reasons for Aussies to prioritise plant purchases – even during a cost-of-living crunch

  • Increased visibility of indoor plants as wellness products

  • Sharable, relatable content to help drive consumer interest at the retail level

  • A good news story you can echo in your own marketing

Spread the word: a healthier, happier home could start with just one plant.

Help shape a more sustainable nursery industry

To stay resilient and competitive, the Australian nursery industry is developing a sustainability program to support continuous improvement and showcase best practice in climate action, resource use and environmental management.

To inform this work, leading trans-Tasman sustainability firm thinkstep-anz is conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). They bring sector experience from current LCA projects with the Australian onion, melon, and mushroom industries, and have supported New Zealand Apples and Pears and Aquaculture New Zealand.

A short, confidential industry survey is coming soon. Your input is essential to ensure the results reflect reality.
